Some little things I'm busy with.........

I'm busy reading all of the blogs I follow, and getting lots of color inspiration for the new year to come. Amazing how many ladies out there combine drawing, painting, crochet, sewing and all kinds of crafty things, onto their inspiring blogs. What an incredible amount of quiet brillirance is out there in blogland! This sort of thing would have colored my world so beautifuly when my daughters were little and my brains were oatmeal. I can see how many mommies carve out a few precious crafting moments whenever they can, and how it renews their soul.

I teach seniors at our local center to draw, and we have also started a wonderful knit/crochet/embroidery(any handwork really) group that's proven to be a winner of a class.

Today we are all snowbound, but I have been working on a butterfly drawing that I started in class yesterday, and I must say, I can see these drawings taking up a good bit of my time, for many days to come. Also want to get some dragonflies in there too.

The purse was a blast to complete. This one is made of Senso thread and the pattern is one of Inga Joana Mertens, that I came across on Ravelry I think....... Anyway it's free and very fun to make. I hadn't done much with all of the Senso I ordered last year from Joann's, and this was a super project for it.

Hubby is out snowplowing, home from work early because the city is pretty much coming to a standstill, due to snow. I worried about him making it home safely, because we live far out of town and things can get a bit hairy. But he's good on snowpacked roads, so he's home nice and safe.

Country goes to the City

Believe it or not, this once almost agoraphobic granny has finally tested the limits of her own fears and frets, and gone to NYC for a week! I know, it's much safer to stay home and crochet, but 57 must be the magic year for finding my inner bravery resources!!! So we did a bazillion things and saw pretty much everything, thanks to our Zanny tourguide, my brother in law. You name it, we saw it. I've never walked so much in my life, mostly to catch subways or walk 6 blocks home from them. 6 blocks you say, not very far. Have you ever walked 6 blocks in NYC???? Enough said.

I was so proud of the fact that :

a). I didn't freak out in the crowds

b). I didn't freak out underground

c). I didn't freak out in between tall buildings with only a bit of blue sky above

d). I learned how to quit saying "excuse me" or "sorry" when I bumped into people, because there was so much humanity, they didn't even notice

e). I could say no very firmly to all of the street vendors that were trying to shove pamphlets and such into my hand

f). I could pee in unfamiliar bathrooms

g). I stopped trying to make eye contact and smile at every person on the street and just became anonymous and trooped along. I didn't even have to be pleasant.

Always so nice to learn a bit about yourself and realize you are stronger, calmer and steadier than you ever knew!

Anyway, these are some of the pictures I took, not the typical Statue of liberty ones, but just tiny glimpses into the amazing world of NYC.

This past weekend we went up to Colorado and did a great 4wheeler trip. 7 hours of bumping along, and did we ever see some pretty sights. The aspen are just starting to turn. Fun day and good friends!

Working with Color

I find that the paint samples at Lowe's are a great way to play with color. Go grab a bunch and cut out the chips. Then make combinations that please you and go get yarn to match! The great thing is, they have already put some colors together inside the folders, and I have seen combinations I never would have thought of.

The African flowers are coming along. I can tell I don't have a plan yet, but am just going crazy with the colors. I'm going to be making a purse eventually, but for now, just playing around is too much fun to stop!

Gosh, so long since i've posted. Been kinda exciting around here though. Been a little busy on the home front. We came home from camping overnight in Colorado, and look what we found... downstairs flooded from a broken water heater. Since then I've had 4 different folks tell me they ALWAYS turn off their water heater if they are going to be gone longer than 24 hours. Why didn't you guys tell me that sooner? Must I always learn everything the hard way???

Any way, long story short, we have $20,000 of ruined red oak flooring and kitchen tile. SO I went down and picked out an indestructible flooring, meant for hotel lobbies and bus terminals (no, not really, but sort of). With all of the dirt, grim, sand and rocks, dog feet and muddy irrigation boots, I've given up on cutsey shabby chic and gone to industrial strength flooring to meet our needs. When the puppy gets housebroken and the irrigation season is over, I may live dangerously and put down a few throw rugs, but for now it will be no nonsense flooring. As for crochet, I'm getting back to it with some fantastic African flowers, which I will be showing off really soon. Fun to make and very versital. HOpe everyonw has been having a fun and otherwise dry summer.

Here's a view from my front porch at evening time. These baskets have been so pretty this year. I got them for the family reunion I had in June, and they have really gone to town. I have to be very diligent about watering, because in this climate (high desert) they dry out fast. But it's a pleasant daily chore.

Want to get some exercise? Try a puppy! My exercise level has gone way up, and it's like I have a new baby in the house. Rosie is now 11 weeks old. She's a cockapoo and I just love her to pieces. A bit demanding, but the hugs and kisses make up for everything. Housetraining isn't going too well, but I've decided to be patient. It will happen. We have a border collie named Annie, but she's pretty much my husband's doggie. I wanted a cuddler and a buddy too. Well, I got one! Too cute!

This week I went back to my teaching job at our Senior Center. I had previously done it for 9 1/2 years. I took some time off and suddenly, I'm in the mood to start again. This was my first lesson, I taught on Tuesday. In order to draw the picture in color, one first needs to see it in your mind, in black and white. Just look at the array of values! Who would have thought there were that many in that little picture? To see the values in a color picture, just squint your eyes. I even do that with my crochet. Are the values pleasing to me? (most of the time). If you are drawing something, in color OR black and white, remember your values!

Since the family reunion is over, I decided to move all of my porch fru-fru to an area where we can enjoy it. So I moved it by our chairs, where we do our sunset watching. All of these things were found at little junk shops on a fun day I spent with my dear friend Kathy. I especially love the mop bucket. My daughter Looked at that and said, " What in the world is that?". Poor child, she had never seen such a contraption. "That, my Swiffer-brained child, is a mop bucket with a wringer-outer thingy." But I had such fun arranging and rearranging my bits and bobs, as Lucy says in Attic24. Cheerio!

In the beginning........

Well, this is where it all started. The year was 1974, and we were stationed at Ft. Ord, CA. A nice army post, but Steve had to work about 150 miles away, so I basically only saw him on weekends. So my little baby girl and I had a lot of time on our hands. Peter Max was very popular right then, and this crochet book caught my eye. Also, the Sunset book on Crochet (check the price!). My first crochet project was and intricate spider web shawl. Of course that would be someting I would pick! Not knowing a thing about crochet, I attempted something way out of my league. I did finish it, and it came out fine. I learned a lot and made many mistakes, but it started a love of crochet that's lasted all these years. Some of the Peter Max stuff is even back in fashion now! Such humble beginnings!

A Small Request

Okay, I have things to do and places to go, but how does a Grammy turn down a request from a two and a half year old for a blankie? Answer, she doesn't. All life as we know it has come to a screeching halt while I churn out a blankie for Molly. She had very specific instructions. It is to be yellow and happy. So I got some Vanna Baby yarn and am making the brightest, most gaudy blankie I can, to suit her taste! It's making up really fast and is quite fun actually. This pattern is from Lion Brand Free patterns and I am really having fun with it. I think all the grandkids need a new blankie and will probably get busy on them for Xmas. These are the memories we just can't be too busy for!

Summer Morning

It's so nice to take a few moments in the morning and just take in the sights and smells of the country. Listen to the birds and take a stroll with the doggie. I'm really more of a fall and winter person (probably because the things I love are more inside things), but summer mornings are quite delicious too.

Knit and Crochet club

I've been dying to start a local knit and crochet club. I'll only be doing the crochet part, unless some brave soul decides she can teach me to knit. I couldn't think of anything more fun (besides grandkids, of course) than getting together with a group of like minded friends and chatting and working together. Okay, the Family reunion is over and after sleeping for three days, I'm back to my work of crochet. I will think twice before commiting to feed and entertain 37 people for 4 days. Oksy, so I have to learn things the hard way! Next year I suggested we all take our trailers and meet at a KOA. Then we can each prepare a meal! Anyhoo, I just finished this basket last night. It was a freebie pattern at Hobby Lobby and I really liked working with the chunky yarn. It made up in two sittings. If you want the pattern I'll get it to you. I think these baskets would make super Xmas gifts, filled with homemade goodies. And of course I loved the red yarn, because it goes with my kitchen.

This drawing has been a constant friend for about 8 months! An hour here or there, sometimes three. It's a surprise for my cousin for being such a lovely person and pal. This is what I see when I think of her. She loves sunflowers and has them in her house everywhere. In her paintings, and in vases! This is a thank you for the beautiful windchimes she sent me.

Don't Faint, I'm back!

Where has the time gone, and what have I been doing for almost two months since my last post???? I have no idea... no really, I guess I need a short hiatus from the blog. Now I'm back and refreshed and ready to crank out some summer crochet. I've finished a lovely cotton hobo, and if you want the pattern I would be happy to direct you to it. Such a fun project and you can use cheap old cotton and just have a ball with it! My sweet sister sent me the 100 flowers book and I'm madly trying to make all of the cute little flowers and veggies with my gorgeous cotton I got down in Phoenix at Cactus Yarns. Wish I had a zillion more skeins! No, that's not true. I'm working hard on my yarn hoarding. "My name is Lindy and I'm a yarn hoarder". "Hi Lindy".

Actually, just this morning I took a huge black garbage sack and was RUTHLESS I tell you! I quickly dumped a bazillion skeins into it and am taking it to the Goodwill, so some other poor hoarder can add to their stash. Also, I've noticed that somehow, mysteriously, I'm missing crochet hooks. Hmmmmmm. I need to restock. But where are they? In the inner workings of the recliner? Down the heater vents? Lost on an airplane somewhere? Who knows. A good excuse to go buy more tools of the trade. Something about a shiny new hook that just floats my boat.

Speaking of which. I LOVE Love Love my new Vera Bradley duffle! I am making it my new crochet tote. What fun to go into one of her stores when in was in San Francisco a while ago! The colors would drive you mad! Decisions, decisions. Get on her website and see what I mean. Lovely!

Art is messy!!

I keep getting down on myself for my cluttered, messy studio. But after some thought (years actually) I've decided that any creative process is messy. (Remember childbirth???). When I get into a project I'm up to my armpits in yarn, pencils, paint, etc. I look at artist mags and see the perfect, organized studios, and think, what's wrong with me? How can I create in this chaos? Then I remember that in college, I was really into pottery class. That was a huge mess! I would go over to the art room and throw pots early in the morning til late at night. I was covered in clay and my fingernails were worn down to nubs. It was one of the best times of my life! Currently, I have my kitchen torn apart to repaint, my colored pencils out to finish a picture, and yarn all over the place, just because I like the colors. Does anyone else out there slog through messes in their daily quest to create? I'd love to hear from you!

Where is Spring?

Okay, enough is enough! I know I should be greatful for the moisture, for our hay crop this year. I don't mean to whine. But I am so ready to smell the earth and even look at some green weeds! We keep getting little spurts of warmth, and then wake up to more snow. This of course gives me more time to crochet and draw, but it would be fun to do it outside! I keep waiting for a sunny day to photograph my new totes, but maybe I'll just do it today and settle for less drama, with softer values! Annie (border Collie) and I have been walking the road up to get the paper. It's about 1/2 a mile, all uphill and some of it, REALLY uphill. My soon to be 57 year old lungs get a huge work out. Good thing I've never smoked! At 6000 feet high, it's all I can do to get oxygen. The red wing black birds are back, and trilling up a storm, so I know spring is coming. The Canada geese are in huge V's, flying northward too. So, a little patience is needed. Just enjoy the moment and keep looking for weeds.

Okay, I'm Back!

I got to enjoy the beautiful Phoenix weather and walk my legs off with my girlfriend who is in fantastic shape. I walked about 4 miles the first day and spent the next 2 days on ibuprophen... but we made it to a very yummy yarn shop and an even yummier place called Paradise bakery. Best chicken salad sandwiches I've ever had. BUt now it's back to reality and that's okay. I'm busy making baby stuff and some hats for a little angel that's having heart surgery. I'm praying for her and her family with every stitch!
Remember, spring is only a couple of months away...this may get you through another snowstorm and more mud!

What in the world is this? Who saves these bits of yarn that are snipped off at the end of each project? I do! Because I read on a crochet blog, that if I scatter them around outside in the spring, the birds may find them and use them to build their nests! Can you imagine finding a nest with a bit or two of brilliant yarn in the mix? I'm going to try it next Spring and I'll let you know if I find any!

Yo-Yo Obsession

I admit I've got an obsession to create things that are mind numbingly repetitive. I've made entire quilts out of the cloth yo-yos I sew. Why, you ask? Mostly because it's theraputic. Honestly, give me a good thousand yo-yos to make and I will be happy. No stress, no deadlines, no worries. Just the smooth, repetitve movements of my fingers, and all chaos leaves the body, and peace remains. I like crochet for the same reasons. So nice to be in the grandma stage of life and putter. I think I'll have another Little Debbie.

This is my latest creation from the wonderful Jan Eaton book I just got in the mail. I'm going to try and do all of her 200 crochet blocks this year. Kind of like Julie/Julia did with recipes. Anyway, I know these are old lady colors for the block, but see how good it looks with my Pier 1 pillows on the couch? In the photo, the black looking stripes are really a dark brown. When I get all four blocks done, I will sew them together and put them on a burgundy covered pillow. Who knew that you could mix these colors and come up with something yummy? Will post the finished object.

Just had to get Annie in here to say hi to everyone. She is my sweetheart and sleeps with us, or should I say, she lets us sleep with her.... She's grown up now, but last April she looked like this. My little mugwumps! I've always been an animals are to be outside kind of girl, but Annie has charmed her way into my home. So what if dog hair is on everything I wear into town. So what if I vacuum every day now instead of twice a week. Nothing like a warm paw on your back at night or a snuggle in the morning. I'm mellowing with age and that's a good thing.

The City Hat

Yesterday I went up to a craft fair at the old school house. This school was built in the early 1910's. It is red and just darling, and I'm sure that in it's day, most of the students came to school on horseback. Where I live was just a tiny spot in the road, where farmers were the only residents. The school was a one room school house for all grades. Anyway, I found a wonderful booth of dazzling yarn, from the Brown Sheep Co. I've seen this yarn on the net, but never seen it in person. Oh the colors! Very vivid and cheerful! I made some quick little squares just to play with color and had a most enjoyable evening. Just think, even tho I'm out in the middle of nowhere, I have a new yarn source now, just a couple of miles up the road. It pays to get out and meet your neighbors!

Ever wonder how the scarves I make get finished off? Well here's one that I made out of beautiful Noro yarn in the Queen Anne's Lace pattern. After crocheting it, I pin it to the ironing board and spritz it with warm water. Then let it dry, so when I take it off, all if the lacy points will stay nice and pointy! I've made jillions of these scarves and will never tire of this beautiful pattern

These are the warmers I'm really starting to turn out. They are more simple than my first ones, but a lot cuter I think. I love the flowers on them and I'm having such fun with bright color combinations! The first pair that looks like cobalt blue has almost a purple cast to it. The sap green and orange flowers really pop.

The orange pair were a gift to one of my daughter's sweet friends. The turquoise ones are my personal favorites. Yummy, yummy, yummy!

Car Seat Blankie and Cap

Somebody's getting a surprise!!!! She doesn't know it yet, but when I go to Flagstaff for Thanksgiving, my sweet Morgan is getting this blankie for her baby to be. I like this pattern because it's a small blankie, just right for a carseat or stroller. This one won't get caught up in stroller wheels, and won't drag on the ground. And of course, he will need a matching cap. Sweet dreams little one!

Winter Warmers....

I am having so much fun making these wrist warmers! They take about three hours to make, more or less, depending on what I need to get started for dinner. Today was snowy and I was snowbound! So cozy and peaceful. I had a fire going and coffee in my big cup and Annie, the border collie on the sofa... and a husband who came home for BLT's and a dill pickle lunch. Anyway, I digress... These warmers are fun to make and fun to wear. The middle pair in shades of orange is for my big sister, who is really a tiny little thing, but who will always be my BIG sister. I had such a fun visit at her house, and we got so inspired just looking at each other's current projects. She is an amazing artist and is in to finding coral in rocks and grinding and polishing her way down to beautiful stones she will eventually make into jewelry. Now personally, I prefer the dustless art of crochet, but to each her own.

Wrist Warmers! Too Cute!

Here is my latest fun project! Simple little wrist warmers for those early morning errands. Taking the kids to school or running to the grocery for milk. You want your hands to be warm, but you need your fingers for zipping jackets and fixing a crooked hair barrette. I just love these fun things! I took them on a test drive this morning just to see how warm they kept my hands, and my gosh, they were amazing. It was only 32 degrees outside, but my fingers were toasty warm. I also have 2 children's taupe and one children's cream in stock. I just got back from a week in Lehi and was amazed at all of the newsboy hats I saw! They were all in sewn material, but I saw girls wearing them wherever I went. I can see why these are so popular right now! Too Cute!!!!!

This is a cap I just finished for my granddaughter Zoey. I really like this new pattern, and of course I had to put a flower on it for her! I will probably keep making this style, because it is so distinctive of a style. Newsboy Cap Style #2.

Here is just one example of a skinny scarf. They are popular right now and a girl just can't have enough of them. This one is in really rich shades of browns. The bracelet is crocheted too! Shades of purples...doesn't show up very well.... Scarf is $20, 2 in stock, Bracelet is $50, 1 in stock.
